In 2025, Thornage Hall Independent Living an established provider of residential and day support for adults with learning disabilities, expanded its supported living provision with the development of Orchard Lodge, a purpose built accommodation designed to enhance independence, comfort, and wellbeing.

The charity sought to create a modern, accessible living environment that aligned with its commitment to high quality, person-centred support. Orchard Lodge was envisioned as a sustainable and calming home for individuals transitioning toward greater independence, while remaining fully connected to the wider Thornage Hall community.

It consisted of five spacious en suite bedrooms, a communal living area and contemporary kitchen as well as a beautiful, landscaped outdoor spaces that complement the lodge’s natural aesthetic.

Designed with a strong emphasis on sustainability, efficiency and environmental responsibility key features included a highly insulated timber frame construction, triple glazed windows for exceptional thermal performance and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) delivering improved air quality and reduced heat loss. Clearline fusion roof integrated solar was chosen due to its quality and aesthetic appeal with a total of 98 panels being installed. The building achieved an EPC Rating A, reflecting outstanding energy efficiency. It also successfully passed targeted acoustic testing, ensuring a calm, peaceful environment especially supportive for individuals with sensory needs.

The £1.4 million project was made possible by a community commitment – £1 million was raised by The Compton Way, a strategic, volunteer led fundraising group dedicated to supporting charitable initiatives. Additional funding was generously contributed by others listed below, enabling Orchard Lodge to reach completion.

Robert Jones, Estates and Facilities Manager at Thornage Hall said:

“Orchard Lodge stands as a landmark development for Thornage Hall, expanding its capacity to provide supported living in a way that respects individuality, encourages independence, and delivers long term sustainability. The project demonstrates what can be achieved through thoughtful design, specialist collaboration, and the dedication of community supporters.”
